PHOTOMONTH CELEBRATES PHOTOGRAPHY

photomonth photomonth aims to be the most inclusive photography festival. In 2011 more than 100 galleries and venues in East London and beyond are participating. Together we have created many opportunities for everyone to be involved in photogtaphy. There is a wide range of workshops and courses, photowalks led by knowledgeable guides, a photofair for buying and selling prints, a photo-open show, seminars, symposiums, discussions, artist talks and entertaining events.

The exhibitions explore all aspects of contemporary photography. Images examine identity, issues and ideas, expose stories, inspire debate, offering new and differing interpretations. They transform the way we see ourselves – and each other. They enlighten, outrage, provoke and comfort. They enrich our lives. For almost two centuries photography has changed the way we perceive the world.

photomonth opens at the Bishopsgate Institute with a retrospective of the work of documentary photographer Phil Maxwell, the Photomonth Lecture is given by Simon Roberts at the Whitechapel Gallery, the Portfolio Review is at the V&A Museum of Childhood, Hackney Observed, a screening with established & emerging photographers is at the Hackney Museum, and the closing debate on the Arab Spring takes place at Amnesty International.

We would like to express our thanks to Amnesty International, Bishopsgate Institute, Four Corners, Hackney Central Library & Museum, Lomography Gallery, London Metropolitan University, Rich Mix and Roof Unit for their extensive programmes in support of photomonth and all the photographers, galleries and venues that make photomonth east london the largest photography festival in the UK.
